Socio-economic development

The target of socio-economic development is promotion of prosperous, innovative, competitive and eco-efficient economy, which provides high living standards and full and high-quality employment throughout the Europe. Gross domestic product (GDP) is the best-known measure of macro-economic activity and has been regarded by some as a proxy indicator for societal progress. GDP is closely linked to a number of issues highly relevant for economic development, such as employment or research and development investment. Sustained economic growth, however, if not counterbalanced by eco-efficiency improvements, can damage the natural environment and jeopardise ecosystems, thus significantly affecting well-being in the long run. Sustainable development relies on ensuring economic prosperity while minimising environmental pressures and avoiding over-exploitation of resources.
